It’s phenomenal to think that Diana Nyad actually finished her dream. My mouth fell open, I danced around the room, and yelped a big WooHoo! She did it, she did it!
What an American Hero. 35 years ago she first attempted to swim the most shark infested waters in the world, 101 mile stretch between Cuba and Florida. This week she finally did it and she’s over 60. Mind of steel and heart of gold.
When Diana got out of the water she shared 3 things:
Never, ever give up!
You are never too old to chase your dreams
It looks like a solitary sport but it takes a team
The same goes for all of us bringing our great work into the world. I can’t tell you how many women I meet that tell me they “can’t do it” for all the reasons they say they can’t.
It takes enthusiasm and perseverance. Starring the sharks (your fears) in the face and just keep on swimming.
Many say they are too old or feel they are. What does age have to do with it? Which makes me scream “I am one year younger than God and most days I feel like a five year old!” You have to keep yourself young. Eat, Sleep and Play regularly and often. I call that impeccable self-care and teach that to my clients. It’s a practice.
And then most women have to do it all themselves (Like everything). Build a website, do all their social media, create videos they spend all their time and money and energy trying to learn all this techno creative crap and get totally nowhere fast but furiously frustrated. Marketing is a team sport. You have to build a team before you think you can afford it… so you can afford it.
Gather your team of support around you. Stay focused on what you want. Do it your way, trust your gut. It could take you longer than you thought to get there. But in the end all that matters is that you got there. Thanks, Diana.
